An Intensive Speech-Language Therapy Assistant Program equips students with the practical skills and theoretical background to support communication and swallowing therapy. Graduates are trained to assist SLPs in delivering therapy, documenting progress, and creating supportive communication environments.

14-Week Intensive SLTA Program Outline

Week 1

Program Foundations

• Orientation to the SLTA role and scope of practice
• Ethics, confidentiality (PHIPA, HIPAA) & professionalism
• Introduction to speech-language pathology & audiology teams

Week 2

Anatomy & Physiology

• Anatomy of speech and hearing mechanisms
• Basic neuroanatomy relevant to speech and swallowing
• Lab: Identifying anatomical structures

Week 3

Normal Communication Development

• Typical speech, language, and hearing milestones (birth–adult)
• Bilingualism and multicultural considerations
• Lab: Observing and charting developmental norms

Week 4

Communication Disorders in Children

• Speech sound disorders (articulation, phonology)
• Childhood language disorders (expressive, receptive)
• Lab: Case scenarios with pediatric clients

Week 5

Communication Disorders in Adults

• Aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria
• Cognitive-communication disorders (e.g., from TBI, dementia)
• Lab: Role-play therapy support techniques

Week 6

Voice & Fluency Disorders

• Stuttering and cluttering
• Voice disorders (nodules, vocal misuse, post-surgical care)
• Lab: Supporting fluency and vocal hygiene programs

Week 7

Swallowing & Feeding

• Basics of dysphagia and feeding issues across lifespan
• Safe feeding strategies and precautions
• Lab: Simulation with adaptive feeding equipment

Week 8

Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

• Low-tech and high-tech AAC devices
• Strategies for supporting AAC users
• Lab: Hands-on with AAC software and devices

Week 9

Therapy Materials & Technology

• Creating and adapting therapy resources
• Using digital tools for therapy delivery
• Lab: Designing therapy materials for child/adult cases

Week 10

Clinical Documentation

• Charting client progress accurately and ethically
• Writing progress notes and session reports
• Lab: Case-based documentation practice

Week 11

School-Based Practice

• SLTA role in educational settings
• Collaboration with teachers, special educators, and parents
• Lab: Developing activities for classroom integration

Week 12

Healthcare & Community Practice

• SLTA role in hospitals, rehab, long-term care, and private clinics
• Interprofessional collaboration in healthcare teams
• Lab: Simulated therapy in healthcare scenarios

Week 13

Practicum Preparation

• Professional readiness (resume, interviews, workplace expectations)
• Mock therapy sessions with peer feedback

Week 14

Clinical Practicum / Capstone

• Supervised field placement (clinic, school, hospital, or community setting)
